Beyonce Giselle Knowles, born September 4, 1981, is a native of
Houston who is a founding member of Destiny's Child. Beyonce
co-wrote and co-produced most of the group's hit songs, leading to sales
in excess of 34 million records worldwide. She was the second woman
ever to win the ASCAP Pop Songwriter of the Year Award. Like many of the
new young stars (Lindsay
Lohan, for example), Beyonce started her career at an early age (7).
She met up with LaTavia Roberson, was joined by her cousin, Kelly
Rowland, (born Kelendria Rowland, Feb 11 1981, Atlanta) and then by
LeToya Luckett (born March 11, 1981, Houston) -- the four becoming
Destiny's Child. Influenced by the Supremes and the Jackson Five, the
quartet soon had a television debut on Star Search.
Destiny's Child self-titled first album, released in 1998, included the
hit single, "No, No, No." Their next album, "The writing's On the Wall",
released in 1999, reached the top ten on Billboard. It soon reached
triple platinum status and led to 2 Grammy nominations, multiple awards,
and film soundtracks. The group changed faces, losing Luckett and
Roberson, who were replaced by Michelle Williams (born July 23, 1980)
and Farrah Franklin, who left five months later. The third album,
"Survivor" was an equal hit. Acting was next in the cards for Beyonce,
starting with MTV's Carmen in 2001, then notably as the cliche black hairdo sporting,
Foxy Cleopatra in Mike Myers, "Austin Powers in Goldmember". The group
is now a trio with Beyonce, Kelly, and Michelle making the gold and the
fans happy.
