Inuyasha is one of the best Japanese Anime productions, appealing to all ages and imaginations. It is scary, beautifully-drawn, and oftentimes funny, with characters that are deep and alluring. When ordinary school girl, Kagome is helping her brother look for their cat, they venture into the house of an old well, now covered with boards. From beneath the boards there comes a scratching sound, but it's not the cat. Kagome ventures nearer, the boards burst open, and the 15 year-old Kagome is grabbed from behind by a multi-armed Centipede demon, and drawn deep down into the well. It is the beginning of an endless adventure as Kagome spends time alternately in a demon-ridden past, with characters who are delightful, strange, and each with a glaring weakness. Annie Oglypuss is entranced by Inuyasha, and considers it her favorite fantasy series.

The characters include: InuYasha, a boy-like half-demon with dogs ears, silver hair, and for the most part plenty of natural strength which he can use to heroically defeat the demons. As the story begins, InuYasha is caught stealing the Shikon Jewel (the Jewel of the Four Souls), a gem that can greatly enhance the powers of men and demons, and which InuYasha wants to possess to convert him into a full demon. He is intercepted by Kikyo, the high-priestess guardian of the jewel. Her magical arrow pierces InuYasha, pinning him to a tree. He goes into a deep sleep, not to awaken for 50 years. When Kagome stumbles onto the scene, she frees InuYasha from Kikyo's spell, and InuYasha assists the villagers by destroying the evil Mistress Centipede. But immediately afterwards, he demands the Jewel for himself, proving himself greedy, egotistical, and often argumentative.

Kikyo, the high priestess, dies just after interfering with InuYasha's plans, ordering her people to burn the Jewel of the Four Souls along with her body so that evil entities cannot have it. The beautiful Kikyo was a secret favorite of InuYasha, who could never admit his love for her. With Kikyo's rebirth into Kagome, the interplay of boy and girl, half-demon and high priestess, starts again. The resurrected Kikyo, in the body and personality of Kagome, finds the jewel only to have it accidentally destroyed, shattered into uncountable shards. The pieces become the focus of attention of everyone, including demons, InuYasha, the new village high priestess (Kikyo's sister), and Kagome, as they try to gather them and restore the jewel.

Kagome, the main character, is strong, gentle and unconsciously funny. Perhaps, she is a bit rude to her grandfather. On her 15th birthday, she gets pulled into the well, nearly killed, discovers that she has amazing natural powers, and eventually breaks the spell of the arrow that holds InuYasha pinned to a tree. She is able to travel between both worlds, that of her middle school modern times and ancient Japan. She is quite intelligent, using her brains to conquer seemingly impossible difficulties. She is also alluring to the young demons she encounters (quite often bathing in their vicinity) and soon learns she has innate magical powers. She can see the shards of the Jewel, clean the evil from recovered pieces of Jewel, and has the ability to control InuYasha's dangerous intents, by a simple "Sit Boy!" command, that brings him crashing to the ground whenever his bad manners cause him to lose control.

Shippo is a fox spirit, who became friends with InuYasha and Kagome while he was busy trying to avenge the death of his father. He can transform into weird-looking creatures and objects, though he still retains his bushy tail and is not always so effective when he shape shifts. He gets along well with Kagome, on whom he has a crush, and not so well with the argumentative InuYasha.

The Monk is a youth with a hereditary curse that has created a "hell hole" in his right hand. The hole gives him the power to unleash a tremendous vacuum that sucks up everything in the vicinity. For the most part he uses the power positively to kill demons, but often he has proven himself to be as selfish as InuYasha, though perhaps more honest. He is quite attracted to Kagome (to all girls for that matter), and is not beyond admitting it, compared with InuYasha who denies his interest, and who keeps saying that Kikyo was cuter. While saving the daughters of rich lords, the monk proves to be a bold thief, robbing his hosts blind. He seeks the wizard, Naraku, who placed the curse on his family and whom he desires to kill. It was Naraku who wounded Kikyo and caused her death. He joins forces reluctantly with Kagome and InuYasha to seek the shards of the Jewel to keep them from the hands of evil beings.

Sesshoumara is the half-brother of Inu-Yasha. He's a full demon with a mean streak who doesn't care much for his brother. He is silver-haired and as attractive to the girls as Inuyasha. He functions as a severely troublesome sibling who would like nothing better than to kill his brother and take possession of a powerful sword which was bequeathed to Inuyasha by their mutual father.

Kaede, Kikyo's sister, was a child when Kikyo died. Fifty years after her sister's death, she appears as the old priestess of the village who befriend's Kagome, and places the amulet around InuYasha's neck, that allows Kagome to keep the half-demon under control.
