Obsessive Compulsive behaviour can often take unusual forms. This is the story of Jack. When Jack, not his real name, discovered the delights of a programmable remote control, he became quite an expert. First buying it to replace a destroyed remote, he found he was able to program multiple units, starting with every device in his home. He then took the remote with him whenever he went out to visit friends, but without telling them. He quickly was able to find the codes for stereos and televisions and secretly drive his friends to distraction by turning devices on and off, and changing channels repeatedly.

When Jack's friends discovered what he was doing, they lost all patience with his pranks and gave him the ultimatum to knock it off or don't come back. It was too late. He was hooked. He then made the rounds of the malls and the various bars, barber shops and dentists offices. It is these kinds of businesses which are more successful when the clientele is entertained.

As secretly as he could, Jack found that he could cause confusion and even fights by his secret control of electronic devices. Some of you may remember the delightful movie, Amelie, in which a young girl, who has been tricked by her neighbor, decides that she will enact revenge. She climbs to the neighbor's house, and while he is watching his most important sports show, she disconnects the signal so that he misses the action at the most important times. Her neighbour is beset by fury, unable to understand what is going on.

Jack's strength lay in the fact that he could be present in the public and control the device quickly and effectively. Baseball home runs were changed to Japanese anime cartoons, soap serials had the sound muted at the most significant of times, and sometimes, he just switched off the device and kept switching it off, whenever somebody tried to turn it on.

When the owners the the establishments were looking around for a cause, they could often identify Jack as a suspicious character. This forced Jack to adopt even greater secrecy. He discovered that the infrared signal had the ability to bounce off walls and glass. By choosing the correct location and conducting tests, he was able to enact his crimes from a safe distance, around walls and over partitions. It didn't always work, because the signal could easily weaken as the light was diffused. You can try this yourself at home. Just aim your remote onto a wall opposite the television set. The signal usually gets through.

Jack would have likely discontinued the activity if he had not been so intent upon raising it to the next level. This entailed seeking out television sets which he could control remotely and afar. Making certain that he had the code, he planned his assault to occur when it had the greatest impact. His most disturbing action occurred when he found a television in a pediatric office which was connected to ordinary cable, but which had naturally been set to a children's channel. With an advance study of the viewing guide, he discovered a daytime blue movie that was showing on another channel. He timed his attack to occur just during the commercial so that nobody would know the channel had been changed and the volume raised.

When the commercials ended, what resumed was not a children's show, but a naked women jumping into bed with a man, followed by a lot of panting and gasping. The office erupted in pandemonium as the receptionist and parents rushed and fumbled to correct the situation.

Needless to say, an accidental discovery, eventually enabled Jack to be apprehended. Since no laws had been broken and since the remote control is not an illegal device, it was suggested he volunteer for therapy. Jack obliged, fulfilled his required penance, then disappeared never to be heard from again.

Because it was determined that Jack's behaviour was not derived from any physical problem, he was simply given some counseling. Most obsessive compulsive behaviour of this nature, can be discontinued, but only after the patient recognizes that he has a problem. The importance in identifying these trends early, is so that they do not escalate into more sinister behaviour. So when your hubby is fiddling unnecessarily with the remote control, it is okay to tell him once in a while to "knock it off" before he drives you crazy. Because very likely, he is heading in a direction that could require counseling.
